Can the NDIS Pay for Meal Preparation and Meal Delivery?

If you've ever stared into your fridge at 6pm wondering what on earth to cook — while also managing a disability that makes standing at the stove genuinely hard — you've probably asked this question. Can the NDIS actually pay for someone to help with meals? Or even pay for ready-made meals to show up at your door?

The short answer is yes — with one catch that trips a lot of people up.

The Big Distinction: The NDIS Funds the Labour, Not the Food

Here's the thing most people don't realise until someone explains it: the NDIS can fund the support involved in getting you fed, but it won't fund the food itself. That's the line.

The NDIS is built on the idea that everyone pays for ordinary living costs — rent, utilities, groceries — disability or not. Your food bill is one of those. But if your disability means you can't shop, can't chop, can't stand at the stove safely, or can't follow a recipe without support, the help you need to overcome that barrier is a disability-related support. And that part can be funded.

So a support worker who comes to your home to prepare meals with you, or for you — yes, that's claimable. The grocery money that bought the ingredients — no, that's on you.

Where Meal Support Lives in Your Plan

Meal preparation sits under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life. It's the same flexible budget that covers things like cleaning and gardening help, personal care, and other day-to-day assistance. That's good news, because Core Supports are the most flexible part of your plan — you can generally shift money around within the Core budget to pay for what you actually need, without having to renegotiate your plan.

Even better: meal preparation doesn't have to be named as a specific line item in your plan for you to use it. If it's reasonable and necessary — directly related to your disability and your goals — you can fund it flexibly from Core. You don't need the word "meals" written anywhere in your paperwork.

Meal Delivery: When Ready-Made Meals Can Be Funded

This is the murkier part, so let's be honest about it. Meal delivery — having prepared meals delivered from a company that cooks them for you — can be funded, but only in specific circumstances.

The key question the NDIA asks is whether this is the most reasonable way to get you this support. If a support worker could come help you prepare meals, the NDIS will usually expect that option. But there are situations where delivered meals make more sense:

In those cases, yes, meal delivery can be funded. The food inside those delivered meals still sits in a grey area, so providers usually structure it so the support and preparation component is what gets claimed — not the raw ingredients.

Honestly, this genuinely varies case by case. If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies, talk to your plan manager or support coordinator before booking anything, because you don't want a bill you can't claim.

💡 Key point: The NDIS funds the support that gets you fed — the time and labour of preparing a meal, or helping you cook it yourself — but not the cost of the food. Keep that line in your head and most of the confusion disappears.

What About Group Homes and SIL?

If you live in Supported Independent Living (SIL), meal support is usually bundled into your SIL funding — the workers supporting you with daily living generally handle meals as part of their shifts. That's different from someone living independently, where meal preparation might be a standalone support you book separately. Not sure which bucket you're in? Our guide to how SIL works might help.

How This Works Day to Day

Let's get practical, because this is the part that matters. Say you've decided meal prep support is right for you. Here's roughly what happens:

That last step is where plan management quietly earns its keep. Your plan manager makes sure you're not being overcharged, tracks how much of your Core budget is going toward meals each month, and flags it if you're burning through funds faster than the plan period can sustain. It's the kind of thing you don't think about until you're eight months in and the numbers look off.

Don't Let the Grey Area Stop You From Asking

Meal support is one of those NDIS areas where people hesitate to ask, either because they're not sure it's allowed or because they feel embarrassed about needing help with something as basic as eating. Please don't be. If preparing meals is a genuine barrier because of your disability, it's exactly the kind of everyday support the NDIS exists to fund.

The trick is just knowing where the line sits — the support is claimable, the groceries aren't — and then finding someone good to help. If you're already working with a plan manager, they can help you figure out whether meal support fits your budget and point you toward providers who offer it.

And remember: plan management itself is fully NDIS-funded at no cost to you. The NDIS adds plan management funding on top of your support budgets, so every dollar in your Core budget stays available for the things that matter — including getting fed without it becoming a daily battle.
