Is NDIS Plan Management Really Free? The Honest Answer

Someone looking at their NDIS plan on a laptop with a cup of coffee, relaxed and in control of their funding

If you've been told NDIS plan management is "free" and you're a bit suspicious about that — good. You should be. In a world where nothing seems to be free, it's reasonable to wonder what the catch is. So let's talk honestly about where the money comes from, who pays for it, and whether you'll ever see a bill.

The short answer: yes, it really doesn't cost you anything

NDIS plan management is fully funded by the NDIS at no cost to you. When you request plan management in your NDIS plan, the NDIA adds funding on top of your support budgets specifically to cover it. It doesn't come out of your Core, Capacity Building, or Capital budgets — it's entirely separate. You don't pay a setup fee, a monthly fee, or a per-invoice fee. Your support dollars stay where they belong: paying for your supports.

But I get why you'd be sceptical. Plenty of people have been burned by services that said "no cost" and then found a monthly debit on their account six months later. So let's dig into how this actually works.

Where the money actually comes from

The NDIA sets a fixed monthly rate for plan management. As of 2025–26, it's around $107 per month. That money is added to your plan on top of everything else — think of it as a separate line item that says "plan management" and only gets drawn down when your plan manager does work for you.

Here's the key bit: you never touch this money, you never see an invoice for it, and it never leaves your control in a way that affects you. Your plan manager claims directly from the NDIS portal each month for the work they've done — processing invoices, tracking your budgets, sending you monthly statements. You're not in the middle of that transaction at all.

💡 Key point: Plan management funding is a line item the NDIA adds to your plan — it's not something you pay, and it doesn't reduce your support funding. If a plan manager ever asks you for direct payment, that's a red flag.

So why do some people worry there's a catch?

Honestly, a couple of reasons. First, some providers in the NDIS space aren't transparent about how things work, and that breeds distrust. Second, the term "plan management fee" shows up in plan statements and it can look alarming if you don't know what it is. You might see a deduction of $107.80 on your statement and think "wait, am I paying that?" — but you're not. That's the NDIA paying your plan manager from the separate plan management allocation.

We've also heard stories of participants whose plan managers tried to charge them for "extra services" outside the NDIA rate. That's not how it works. The NDIA rate covers everything a plan manager is supposed to do. If someone's trying to upsell you, they're not following the rules.

What your plan manager's monthly fee actually covers

It's worth knowing what you're getting, because $107 a month should buy you a decent service. Here's what a good plan manager does:

If your plan manager isn't doing most of these things, you might want to look at what to ask before signing up.

Does "free" mean lower quality?

This is a fair question. When something's free, sometimes the service is bare-minimum. But plan management is different because the NDIA is the payer, and they set a rate that's meant to fund a proper service. A good plan manager can run a solid business on that rate — paying experienced staff, maintaining good systems, and being responsive.

That said, not all plan managers are equal. Some are just invoice processors who you'll never hear from. Others are genuinely helpful — they'll flag when your funding is tracking low, help you understand your budgets, and answer your calls. The price is the same either way, so it's worth finding someone good.

What about other NDIS costs — are those always covered too?

While plan management itself is fully funded, not every NDIS expense works that way. Some things to watch for:

These aren't plan management costs — they're general NDIS things to be aware of. Your plan manager should help you understand what's claimable and what isn't, which is part of the service you're getting.

Can you switch if you're unhappy?

Yes, and it's easier than most people think. You can change plan managers mid-plan at any time. There's no penalty, no lock-in contract, and no cost to switch. Your new plan manager handles the handover. The fact that the service is NDIS-funded means you're never financially trapped — you can leave whenever you like, for any reason.

The bottom line

NDIS plan management really is free for participants. The NDIA funds it separately so your support budgets stay intact. A good plan manager saves you time, reduces stress, and helps you get more out of your plan — all without touching your wallet. If anyone tells you differently, or tries to charge you for what the NDIA already covers, it's worth asking questions.

We're biased, obviously — we're a plan manager. But we'd say the same thing even if we weren't: if something in the NDIS is genuinely free and it makes your life easier, take it.
